What Do You Think Of When You Hear “Like A Girl?”

At some stage in life the meaning of the term “like a girl” twists from something incredible into something insulting. When I was asked to spread the word about the #LikeAGirl movement, intended to remove the negative connotation associated with the phrase, I enlisted my son’s help. I planned to share a clip of his feminine impression how a girl might run. However, it seems he’s on the cusp of the aforementioned twist. At eleven he still views males and females through equality coloured glasses. When I asked him to demonstrate a “girl run”, he ran hard and strong. It wasn’t the stereotypical reaction I had banked on. I considered grounding him for ruining his mother’s blog post. 😉 So how do our sweet kids suddenly sour? What dark force clouds their minds thus creating this negative point of view? Oh wait a minute… “You throw like a girl!” “Shoot me if I ever start running like my mother. She runs like a girl.” “He screamed like a girl for the entire ride. It was like riding a roller coaster with Ned Flanders.” All of these gems above? Me. All me. (I made the Ned Flanders crack just last week[…]

Family Hairstory

Avery’s mane of wavy blonde hair was a long time coming, but now at seven years old, her crowning glory is fierce and fabulous. To prevent glue and lunch and sand and small birds and whatever else from getting stuck in her hair during the day, I tie it back or braid it every morning. I won’t tell you how many hours I’ve spent on You Tube trying to master the fishtail braid… The other morning I was running way behind. As I was frantically throwing lunches together I could hear the kids upstairs brushing their teeth. “Stay still Avery,” I heard my son say to his sister. “Okay now look. How’s that?” he asked her. “Wow… I booootiful!” Avery announced. She came downstairs proudly sporting a messy but awesome ponytail ala her brother (the elastic basically fell out before Avery reached the kitchen). “Maybe you should give me a ponytail lesson? In case you’re sick or away or something so I know how to do Avery’s hair for school.” Aw Sebastian. You’re mummy’s hairo. xo

Three

My mother-in-law believed things happened in threes. If two great things happened, she’d look for the third and always seemed to find it. After two unfortunate events, she’d breath a sigh of relief when the third one finally occurred so we could relax. She truly believed in, and spoke often about the significance of the number three. Shortly after she passed away my son and I went for a walk after dinner. He was struggling to make sense of why his Grandie was taken away so suddenly. I told him about my friend Sandi who lost her father a few years ago. She told me to look for signs. Signs brought her and her family comfort. Sandi told me that her dad sent signs all the time and I shared some of her specific examples with my son. It had gotten dark and the streetlights had come on. As we cut through a parking lot on our way home, we walked under three lamp posts. As we passed, each one of the three lights flickered and went out. One, two, three in a row. Was it a sign? Was Grandie looking down on us, listening to our conversation, and[…]

Ruffled A Few Red Winged Blackbird Feathers

Have you ever been attacked by a Red Winged Blackbird?   I have. I must’ve gotten t too close to its nest as I walked my dogs through the park. Or maybe I offended it by “tweeting” while I was walking. Ha.   Or perhaps it mistook my unbrushed hair for a nest? I could definitely see that.  Whatever the reason, I ticked-off this foul fowl somehow and it swooped down from its perch to dive bomb my head. Of course I screamed a shrilly scream and ran away. I had to explain to the man walking his Husky that I was fine—I wasn’t being attacked by a park perv or an aggressive squirrel. It was nice of him to be concerned. The screaming and the flailing arms seemed to deter the bird and it left me alone. Pecker Head. P.S. This episode did nothing to improve my Crazy Dog Walking Lady reputation. All Dressed

She is perfectly able to dress herself in the morning. Well, pretty much. Buttons and zippers can still be a challenge. Yet I can’t seem to stop myself from “helping.”  Since I realize she needs to learn to do things on her own, I’ve been laying out her clothes and allowing her to get dressed on her own, no matter how long it takes (and sometimes it takes forever).   I need to take this a step further by letting actually her choose her own outfits. But it’s a tough one. For me, not her. She loves picking out her clothes. (This is where the control freak in me starts to really squirm.)   Today I was running late so I let Avery put together her own outfit for school. Oh how I wish I had video of her jumping through her doorway out into the hall, arms overhead, legs outstretched in a victorious V-stand, grinning from ear-to-ear exclaiming, “Tah-dah! I dressed!”    Halloween t-shirt, underwear on backwards and inside-out, one long black sock, one short white sock, no pants. She was ready for school.   We have a strict “you must wear pants in public” rule so I suggested she put[…]
