Miscarriage

This story is about a baby conceived, but never delivered. It’s about the thrill of finding out you’re pregnant, and then disappointment you feel when suddenly you’re not. It’s about miscarriage, but it’s also about chickens and abysmal record keeping. Random, but related. When my husband and I found out we were expecting our first child, we were overjoyed. I knew I was pregnant only days after conception. I just knew. A pregnancy test confirmed it and I went to the doctor for a blood test to be sure. We told our families right away because that kind of excitement just can’t be contained. We made plans, discussed names, researched strollers. I couldn’t wait to share the happy news with my class of grade two students, but I decided to wait the obligatory three months—which never came. At nine weeks I miscarried. We went through the usual panic—trying to fix it, trying to stop it, trying to save it. Of course you can’t stop nature’s course. Mother Nature is stubborn. She does what she wants, when she wants, for reasons only she knows. My husband called my work to say I would be off the next day. I needed a[…]

Puzzled

Rain, rain, go away, come again another day…and bring Tylenol. And four extra sets of hands. And a bag of patience. And a box of pinto grigio. Yes I said box. And a bucket of ice cream. And a bag of something salty — anything, I’m not picky. It’s summer, it’s soggy, and the natives are growing restless. Thankfully my kids are rather creative natives. This morning I found them in my daughter’s bedroom doing a puzzle. I didn’t question their methods. I simply took a photo and reversed quietly out of the room.

My Little Pony, Sexy But Lonely….

I assure you this is a PG-rated post despite the suggestive title. I’ll explain, but first you MUST listen to the My Little Pony Theme Song below. It’ll only take a minute. Actually, the first 5 seconds will suffice. It’s essential for the rest of this story. No really. Now that the song is firmly lodged in your brain FOREVER (The tune sticks like glue. No anti-horse reference inferred by the way.) we can go on. My daughter adores the My Little Pony gang — both in their pony and human forms. She watches the show at home on Netflix and sometimes her brother watches too. He says he doesn’t like it, but I say neigh. He so does. One day shortly after watching the show, I heard him singing the theme song to himself but with new and *improved* chorus which goes like this… “My little pony, sexy but lonely.….” (it’s important to note that the word sexy must be sung with a Sean Connery accent). Why? He’s ten and thinks the word seksi is hilarious. I’m 40-esque and agree; especially when said with an accent while rolling your eyes dramatically. Now we have this shtick where certain extended[…]

Apparently I’m A Dinosaur…

Call me a wet blanket, but I’m not a fan Hallmark holidays. Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day… I can’t help but think they make those who are missing special people in their lives, feel left out. I don’t make a big deal of these holidays, but when you have children who want to celebrate Mother’s Day by making you feel special, how can you say no? Avery was over-the-moon excited to show me the present she made for me at school. She wasn’t exactly sure what “Mother’s Day” was and she *may* have wished me ‘Happy Birthday’ several times over the weekend. But when she presented me with the candle she made at school she couldn’t have been more proud and I knew this gift came straight from her little heart.  The girl really does light up my life in so many ways… And my son, my sweet creative kid blew me away. Last year for my mom’s birthday, he and I wrote something for her — a mock animal project based on the elusive “Anne” grandma. This Anne-imal project was so much fun to work on together. Clearly he enjoyed it and remembered what to do since he[…]

We all have stuff to deal with. But hopefully said “stuff” is spread out and doesn’t happen all at once….like when life’s little challenges rained upon us in one intense deluge.
