Boy Toys?

Is there really such a thing as a boy toy? I don’t mean in a Madonna sort of way…  I’m talking about gender specific toys. You know, dolls for girls, army men for boys. For the record, the dolls and army dudes totally hook-up after hours. Toy Story opened my eyes to that deviant underground society. My kids don’t pay much attention to gender labels. They play with whatever captures their imaginations in the moment. My son often plays with his sister’s most iconic of girl toys — the dollhouse. Mind you, it generally serves as the hideout for robots, dinosaurs and a regiment of Storm Troopers. My daughter plays with her dolls occasionally, but not for long. She’s at her happiest when she’s active. And sweaty. And dirty. What captures her interest most are bike rides, bugs in jars, soccer games and her new passion, baseball {which in our rather small yard has led to abundant trips to the neighbour’s on ball retrieval missions}. Yesterday while my creative boy was creating, my sporty girl was playing with her new Grow-to-Pro Triple Hit Baseball machine. She started out t-ball style, but soon graduated to auto pitch. She can load[…]

The Dollhouse

One dismal day a mysterious box arrived at my door. Behind said door, was a tired mother and a bored five year old, itching for something to do. I suspect Mom Central and Fisher Price may have some kind of “That Mama Needs A Break, ESP.” This was our first official toy delivery during our stint as a Fisher Price Family. The look on my daughter’s face when she saw her new My First Dollhouse….  …was sheer happiness. The look on my face when I read this…   ….was all, “Gah! They’re talking about me. To the treadmill!!” *For the record, my husband’s hands are an average size. Santa brought Avery a Fisher Price dollhouse two years ago. But this new abode is a more pimped out version. So now, instead of one lonely home, we have the makings of a neighbourhood. It’s a G-rated version of Knot’s Landing (at least, that’s what is going on in MY head when I’m playing along). Avery has a corner of her room dedicated to her imaginary town. Recently however, I noticed both dollhouses were missing. It seems the kids picked up stakes and moved the town to big brother’s room.    […]

Super Bowls & Slow Cookers

<—- This is a rather super bowl don’t you think? My daughter made it for me at school.     But I digress. This post is about another kind of  <—- Super Bowl.     I find football about as entertaining as well, football. Boooring.  However I do enjoy The Super Bowl — if only for the unique commercials, Half-Time show (wardrobe malfunctions in particular) and the super bowls of food!  Chili, wings, chips and dips add up to a tongue touchdown which makes the “sporty bit” easier to digest. This year we’re going to a friend’s house to stuff our faces cheer for our favourite team (*Mental note: find out who’s playing BEFORE the first half). I’m bringing a cheesy dip in my Citrus Slow Cooker. I love these little guys made by Hamilton Beach for Proctor Silex. They come in four cool colours and the 1.5 quart size is perfect for appies.  I plan to bring my Super Bowl dip in it and leave the slow cooker behind as my hostess gift. Hamilton Beach knows a thing or two about making a great slow cooker – portable cookers with lids that latch (great for bringing with[…]
