Best of The Celeb Charity Songs

After hearing the latest celeb benefit song—Band Aid 30—I played the original 1984 version for my son. He wanted to know everything about it… who the singers were, who wrote it, why they wore those headphones, and was I sure that guy (Boy George) was actually a man? And so on… This lead to me showing him other versions including “We Are The World” and the Canadian “Tears Are Not Enough”. If you have a few minutes, take the musical memory walk for yourself and take your kids along! Band Aid—Do They Know It’s Christmas (1984): Written by Bob Geldof & Midge Ure to raise money for relief of the 1983–85 famine in Ethiopia. This will forever be my favourite. Stupidly, it took me several decades to clue in that it’s “There’s a world outside my window, a world of dread and fear” NOT… “a world a stratosphere…” Band Aid II—Do They Know It’s Christmas (1989): Remake featuring Bananarama, Big Fun, Glen Goldsmith, Kylie Minogue, The Pasadenas, Chris Rea, Cliff Richard, Lisa Stansfield, Technotronic, etc. Not as well known but a pretty decent effort. Band Aid 30—Do They Know It’s Christmas (2014): Bob Geldof’s modern day version of ‘Do they[…]

Wonderland Then and Now

When I moved to Ontario from B.C. in 1987, I left my best friend behind. In body that is, but not in spirit. We’re still best friends ALL these MANY (I can’t even do the math) years later. Every summer Tiff would fly out East and we’d always hit Wonderland.   Let’s discuss my 80s outfit, shall we? What it lacked in shirt length, it made up for in oddly high waisted cut-offs. And the puff of hair atop my head? Seems I may be partly responsible for global warming as a result of my excessive use of Aquanet. Even though photographic evidence screams dork, I’m convinced I was hot at the time. We strutted around the theme park like we were all that and a bag a banana clips. We’d arrive when the park opened and were the last to leave. One year it absolutely poured. They shut down most of the rides, but we didn’t let it stop us from having fun. We ran around singing and splashing in the puddles like idiots. To avoid catching cold, we drove home in our bras and underwear—more comfortable for us, not as comfortable for the truckers passing us by[…]

Super Simple Summer Fun

As Canadians we spend a lot of time indoors. This past winter was especially brutal. Spring arrived just in the nick of time because the Thornburys were getting dangerously close to a “The Shining” situation. Rum—good. Red rum—bad. My kids have been itching to get outdoors and back to nature and that’s exactly what we did last week. We spent seven glorious days with family at their cottage on a lake in New Brunswick— sans wifi or television. No iPhone grafted to my hand? I expected it to be difficult. It wasn’t. It was heaven. Here are a few of the activities we enjoyed: On day one of our vacation, thanks to the last remnants of Hurricane Arthur, we had no choice but to make our own indoor fun. To be clear, the dads coordinated the fun. I sat on the covered porch and read for three solid hours. Bliss. So what fun did the guys come up with? First they played a game — “Super Moose” (Reg. $29.99). It’s a wooden puzzle challenge where players take turns balancing antlers on a wobbly moose head. It’s meant for ages 3+. The older more dextrous and patient kids enjoyed it,[…]

She’s Da (photo) Bomb…

It took a few years before my daughter was invited to a birthday party, but once she attended her first, she couldn’t get enough. The balloons, the colourfully wrapped gifts, the kids happily playing and laughing, and of course the birthday cake. Avery is hopelessly smitten with parties. And for some reason she thinks every celebration is all about her. I have no idea who she gets that from. Ahem…clearly the party animal doesn’t fall from from the tree. *I’ve never fallen from an actual tree, but I did get stuck in one after climbing too high on a dare. I had to be rescued. In retrospect I wish I hadn’t been wearing a skirt. Last weekend we helped our friends M and J celebrate their sixth birthday. We partied. Hard. Some of us even partook in a little photo bomb action… Of course this wasn’t the first birthday photo bombing incident. There was this one too.  *Note the teeny finger print in the icing…”somebody” just couldn’t resist fondling the fondant. Aw, that’s my girl. 🙂

Pop With A Side Of Mashed

Mashed potatoes, a spooky monster mash, Hawkeye from Mash, watching a baby’s face as they taste their first mashed banana….these are a few of my favourite (mashed) things. And mash-ups. The really good ones. When they do a mash-up on Glee my heart sings. I stumbled upon this magnificent musical mash-up while I was hopelessly lost on the internet working hard this morning. I’ve listened to it a dozen times today and instantly went from pooped to peppy. Enjoy!
