On The Cuff: Women and Hypertension

Ever felt like you were going to blow a gasket? Not that I know what a gasket is exactly, but I know it’s in a car engine and if it blows, it’s not good. If you blow your engine, you can rebuilt it. But if your head explodes? That’s a messy, done deal. Apparently I’m under a lot of pressure—which is odd because I’m not overly stressed. I’m reasonably calm and happy most days. I think somebody needs to tell that to my blood pressure. Hyptertension runs in families. It happens to run in mine. My doctor has been suggesting that I go on a light dose of BP medication, but I’ve been fighting her on it. I’d hate to see what she writes about me in my file when I leave the office ~”PATIENT IS DIFFICULT. THINKS SHE AND DR. GOOGLE KNOW EVERYTHING.” At my last appointment my doctor ordered a 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor. If I failed the test, I agreed that I would medicate.   The tech at the Cardiologist’s office hooked me up. The cuff inflates every 20 minutes and takes a reading which is recorded on a device in a bag (sadly, not[…]

Ten Wishes

I sang, “We three kings of Orientar” for ages until I realized that Orientar isn’t a place. I eventually figured out that “Paper Bag Writer” isn’t correct either. Seems I’ve been mangling song lyrics for decades. Anyway, the time my girlfriends and I rode camelback through the desert, I felt like one of the Three Kings of said song — we were three wise-ish woman on a quest. Sleeping under a blanket of stars, I made a wish and hoped it would come true. And it has. *looks toward my happy family* As Christmas day and the new year approach, I have new hopes and wishes… I wish: For her to always be loved and accepted for who she is. For him to continue to feel confident and loved.  For her to get the “all clear” … this is the news we all long to hear. For him to make the best decision because decisions like these are hard. For her to find her voice. For them to find their groove — to make a difference and feel important. For her to find love.  For him to find peace. For her to find a resolution. For him, I wish health[…]

You Have The Wrong (Text) Number

I was woken up today at 5:52 AM by my phone buzzing—an incoming text from my husband. For some reason he needed me up at 6:30. I wracked my sleepy brain. Did I ask him to wake me for some appointment that had temporarily slipped my mind? I texted back. No reply. I started to worry. Was he okay? Why wasn’t he answering? Then it dawned on me that he mis-texted.     I can’t really make fun of him (but I will) for mis-texting. I do it a lot. Recently I texted my sister-in-law several dog photos. She wrote back and asked me to stop. Surely she was joking. I texted more dog photos. “You have the wrong number.” She replied. Haha! She’s such a kidder. I texted another dog photo. “I am not Tanya! You have the wrong number. Please stop texting me.” Whoops. If I had been thinking clearly this morning I would’ve texted my husband a picture of me in all my bed headed splendor, flipping him the bird. Such a golden opportunity missed… Have you seen Buzzfeed’s “27 Ways To Response To A Wrong Number Text?” You gotta love people who take the time for antics like[…]

Happy Disability Day?

Today is International Persons with a Disability Day. I’d never actually heard of it until it popped into my Twitter stream. It seems there are “DAYS” of recognition for everything now—like “Wear Brown Shoes Day” (coming up tomorrow in case you’re interested), There’s also: Ninja Day Learn Your Name In Morse Code Day Battery Day (sounds like a great opportunity to relax and recharge) Cat Herder’s Day (otherwise known as parenting small children day) Pigs In A Blanket Day (assuming they mean the food, not “let your Guinea Pig sleep with you”) Talk Liketh Shakespeare Day Hug A Plumber Day (Just don’t get cheeky with their, you know, bum crack) Bird Day—Reminds me, I need to send a pigeon a Happy Bird Day card… And there many other obscure and silly days that completely make my day. In case you think I’m making these up, the entire calendar of DAYS is right here. I don’t know who came up with Disability Day. Is it even real? It certainly is for our family as we “celebrate”and embrace diversity every day. Disability Day, recognized by the United Nations, was established to help break barriers and open doors in hopes of creating[…]

Morning has broken…my spirit

Sweet photo, right? Big brother helping his little sister with her homework while mum makes a nutritious breakfast. Yes, he’s helping his sister with her math. He’s trying, he really is and god love his sweet heart for that. But mere seconds after this photo was taken, little sister backhanded her doting brother in the face shouting, “I do it myself ‘Bastiannnnnnnnnnnn-nah!” As for the nutritious breakfast? I haven’t been grocery shopping in awhile and had to mix two kinds of cereal together to make enough. And we were out of milk so I thinned yogurt with water and hoped it would pass for milk. They’d be too busy complaining about the bruised bits in the mashed banana to really notice the milk anyway. After asking my daughter to get out from under the table, stop touching the dogs and to finish her breakfast about a dozen times, I put my face in my hands and admitted silently that mornings are not my favourite time of day. I knew what I should do. I NEEDED to sit down at the table with the kids. Avery wanted my attention. Any good parent could see that. However, I am not always[…]
