Life Is A Highway

Full disclosure I used to think (and even squawk out loud) that I didn’t understand the purpose of ride on cars. “Shouldn’t kids be exercising? Make them pedal for heaven’s sake! Are we raising a generation of lazy kids?!” I’m here to say that I was wrong and stand corrected. To make amends for my judgey ignorance, I invite any parent to whom I may have spouted off about this, to drive over me with their kids’ ride on vehicle. My daughter has been asking for one of these forEVER! She’s seen other kids riding them in the park and down our street and she’s been relentless. So this Christmas, look what Santa (aka my friends at Fisher-Price) delivered… It’s the Dora Jeep Wrangler in all it’s glory. To say my child was thrilled is an understatement. She couldn’t wait to get behind the wheel. However, Canadian winters are cold so we took our fun to our unfinished basement/indoor playground. At first she couldn’t steer. Like, at all. It was comical. I had to redirect her constantly until she started to understand the relationship between the steering wheel and where she wanted to go. It was like a light bulb[…]

Our Favourite Ride At Disney World

When we asked our kids to name their absolute favourite Disney World ride, they unanimously agreed… The Hollywood Tower at MGM Studios was the winner! If you think our six year old would be terrified and far too little for such a ride, think again. She was the dang ring leader. When we up rode the rickety elevator for the first time, we did so together as a family. When the ride came to a stop, and the shrill screams of the riders (mostly my husband) subsided, it went silent. People were obviously catching their breath, and possibly swallowing down bile. And then amid the dark quiet a tiny voice cried out, “AGAIN!!!” My husband’s response to our daughter’s passionate plea was a solid, “Nope. Never again.” So we ditched that nauseated chicken and lined up and rode again. Several times. Yes, I felt queasy. In fact, I lost all blood flow to my upper body and my organs jellified at some point.  But, I’d do it again.  I love that my kids are fearless. That’s one of the most glorious benefits of childhood. Adventures aren’t obstructed due to pragmatic reasoning. Exhilarating experiences aren’t missed because of “what ifs?” or “maybe[…]

Overjoyed

Perhaps it’s attention seeking behaviour or possibly it’s the thrill of being the centre the action. Whatever the reason, my daughter is rather dramatic. I haven’t the vaguest idea where she gets it from. *flips back hair and sighs emphatically*  The first time she staged a “fake fall” we were shocked. We were spending the day at the Royal Ontario Museum as a family when Avery stumbled over a gentleman’s foot. She hit the floor with the force of a feather, but instead of getting up and moving on, she remained face down, arms and legs splayed every which way. The man was horrified and immediately went to her aid. We were concerned at first too, but when she looked over at me and grinned, I knew. She was acting.  Since then our mini Meryl Streep has regaled us (and others) with many such dramatic performances. Like an Oscar worthy shopping cart accident at Chapter’s last week.  Or this horrific (looking) bicycle fail at her cousin’s house last summer. Granted, she did tip over but… in slow motion. She took the time to place her cheek gently to the asphalt and even added some groaning for  effect.       […]

Boy Toys?

Is there really such a thing as a boy toy? I don’t mean in a Madonna sort of way…  I’m talking about gender specific toys. You know, dolls for girls, army men for boys. For the record, the dolls and army dudes totally hook-up after hours. Toy Story opened my eyes to that deviant underground society. My kids don’t pay much attention to gender labels. They play with whatever captures their imaginations in the moment. My son often plays with his sister’s most iconic of girl toys — the dollhouse. Mind you, it generally serves as the hideout for robots, dinosaurs and a regiment of Storm Troopers. My daughter plays with her dolls occasionally, but not for long. She’s at her happiest when she’s active. And sweaty. And dirty. What captures her interest most are bike rides, bugs in jars, soccer games and her new passion, baseball {which in our rather small yard has led to abundant trips to the neighbour’s on ball retrieval missions}. Yesterday while my creative boy was creating, my sporty girl was playing with her new Grow-to-Pro Triple Hit Baseball machine. She started out t-ball style, but soon graduated to auto pitch. She can load[…]

As Plain As The Plane On Your Face

Planes can fly. Real planes. Not metal toy ones. Correction, toy planes DO fly, but not for long. Soon enough they’ll come crashing down. And, if you toss a toy plane directly overhead, chances are it will make a crash landing…on your face. Poor Avery learned this the hard way. The lesson was as plain as the nose on her face. Or in her case, as plain as the plane on her nose. Ouch.
