Grief-Helping Kids Cope

My husband’s mum was a vital part of our lives. There hasn’t been a day since she died that we don’t miss her terribly. As adults who’ve had years to develop coping skills, it’s still tough. So how can a child possibly deal with grief when they can’t begin to reconcile the devastation of loss and moreover, the finality of death? Our eleven year old son experienced anxiety resulting from the loss of his grandmother, so we sought help. Grief counseling has helped him begin to accept the death and has given him skills to cope with the fear of losing his parents and sister.   Avery, our seven year old, seems to be the most profoundly affected. She and her ‘Grandie’ had a special bond (one that my husband and I are convinced has continued in some other worldly way. It sounds odd, but the evidence we’ve seen is impossible to ignore). At first Avery believed her Grandie had gone to the dentist and would be coming back soon. We don’t know where this idea came from. Regardless, the first dental appointment I took the kids to afterwards was difficult to say the least. When it became evident that[…]

Skipping To The Beat Of Her Heart

She rarely walks now. She prefers to skip. Sometimes she even skips in a purple tutu. It took her a long time to learn to walk. Less than two years ago she still wore a helmet on the playground, in case she fell.  Now she’s running, jumping and skipping. And when she skips, her strides are only slightly smaller than the grin on her face. She’s proud of herself and with good reason.  I wish I could take credit for her reaching this physical milestone—one that a child with significant gross motor delays might never achieve. Her EAs at school have been working with her on this for months, and it finally paid off. How amazing are they and how lucky are we? I’m so grateful…I could literally skip. Here are 35 seconds of super skipping stupendousness, LIVE and in technicolour.  Caution: This video skips, but in a good way. 🙂

Dissing A Hero

Even helpful and hard working super heros are sometimes dismissed. Take what happened to the Incredibles. That poor family was completely dissed by a cynical society. And check out this poor super hero. Just trying to keep his grandparents; backyard safe and free of evil, look at how his sister and family completely disregards his efforts! To be frank, it’s hard to take super heroes seriously when their cape is held on with a clothes peg. Just saying.

Grandparents—a video

Grandparents are a gift. Sure, sometimes you want to exchange them, but mostly you’re just incredibly grateful to have them in your life. I grew up surrounded by love and laughter and I’m thankful for that. And now my parents are sharing the silly side of life with my kids. When my parents look after their grandchildren, my kids can’t shoo us out the door fast enough. When my husband and I went out for dinner recently, my parents came over and played with the kids for hours in the basement. My mum shot this video of Poppa entertaining Avery is his sweet, funny way.
