On The Cuff: Women and Hypertension

Have you ever felt like you were going to blow a gasket? Not that I know what a gasket is exactly, but I know it’s in a car engine and if it blows, it’s not good. If you blow your engine, you can rebuilt it. But if your head explodes? That’s a messy, done deal. Apparently I’m under a lot of pressure—which is odd because I’m not overly stressed. I’m reasonably calm and exceedingly happy most days. I think somebody needs to tell that to my blood pressure. Hyptertension runs in families. It happens to run in mine. My doctor has been suggesting that I go on a light dose of BP medication, but I’ve been fighting her on it. I’d hate to see what she writes about me in my file when I leave the office ~”PATIENT IS DIFFICULT. THINKS SHE AND DR. GOOGLE KNOW EVERYTHING.” At my last appointment my doctor ordered a 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor. If I failed the test, I agreed that I would medicate. The tech at the Cardiologist’s office hooked me up. The cuff inflates every 20 minutes and takes a reading which is recorded on a device in a[…]

Ten Wishes

I sang, “We three kings of Orientar” for ages until I realized that Orientar isn’t a place. I eventually figured out that “Paper Bag Writer” isn’t correct either. Seems I’ve been mangling song lyrics for decades. Anyway, the time my girlfriends and I rode camelback through the desert, I felt like one of the Three Kings of said song — we were three wise-ish woman on a quest. Sleeping under a blanket of stars, I made a wish and hoped it would come true. And it has. *looks toward my happy family* As Christmas day and the new year approach, I have new hopes and wishes… I wish: For her to always be loved and accepted for who she is. For him to continue to feel confident and loved.  For her to get the “all clear” … this is the news we all long to hear. For him to make the best decision because decisions like these are hard. For her to find her voice. For them to find their groove — to make a difference and feel important. For her to find love.  For him to find peace. For her to find a resolution. For him, I wish health[…]

The BEST Lip Treatment For Chapped Lips

This is my friend Sarah and these are her lips. Note how smooth and supple they are. Every winter my daughter and I suffer from terribly chapped lips. My case is generally mild, but Avery’s lips are horrendous. Chapped lips or Chelities is usually caused by dryness, cold weather, sun/wind exposure or, in my daughter’s case, chronic mouth breathing. Cracking, flaking, peeling, burning, bleeding and even crusting — chapped lips suck and that ain’t lip service.  Lips normally have a very thin oily film on their surface that provides natural protection against moisture loss. If this film is removed, often due to lip licking or biting, this causes the lips to become chapped. Source Over the years we’ve tried several moist ointments, salves and creamy emollients. Haha, I just used five of my most despised words in one sentence and cracked myself (and my lips) right up. No but seriously, we have tried Vaseline, Chapstick, Burt’s Bees Lip Balm, coconut oil and some organic lip butter thing from the health food store. I’ve even smeared butter on my lips out of shear desperation. None of these did much other than to provide temporary relief (and make me crave popcorn). This is what has worked[…]

Is Your Christmas “Nativity Scene Or A Negativity Scene?”

We celebrate the spirit of Christmas — giving from the heart, family, peace and love. And of course eggnog, Santa Claus and Frosty the Snowman. Our kids know that Christmas is the celebration of Jesus’ birth. They know the story, despite the fact that we’re not religious. The message of Christian values and kindness is one my husband and I believe in even if though we may not believe the “story.”   As Christmas approaches and I start to panic because I’m completely unprepared it’s easy to get swallowed up by the hustle and let’s not forget the bustle. The bustle is the worst. Instead of aligning with the Grinches with their aggressive mall parking lot honking or the Scrooges who whine and complain about every little thing, I take a breath, chug a glass of eggnog, and carry on knowing that Christmas is a celebration. Have yourself a positive little Christmas friends. xo  Images: Nativity Scene Negativity Scene

Derek

I don’t watch a lot of television. Unless it’s guaranteed to make me laugh or possibly think, I usually skip it. A friend recommended a new show on Netflix called Derek starring Ricky Gervais.  The first episode had me confused. It wasn’t funny at all. I kept expecting Ricky to turn to the camera ala “The Office” and make some humorous comment. It didn’t happen. And what was with the main character? I wasn’t sure what to make of him at first. Everyone raved about the show, so I watched another episode. I’m so glad I did. Derek is a beautiful story about a man with autism who has found his place in the world.  As the parent of a child with special needs, this gives me comfort. “Despite how he looks, he is kind and sweet and sincere. He’s perfect. He’s just perfect.” says Gervais of his character Derek. Though Derek is unique in how he looks and acts and walks and talks, “kindness comes along and trumps it all.”  I’ve often said that my daughter is the kindest person I know. She loves big with all her heart. She’s a people person. She like Derek, she adores[…]

You Have The Wrong (Text) Number

I was woken up today at 5:52 AM by my phone buzzing—an incoming text from my husband. For some reason he needed me up at 6:30. I wracked my sleepy brain. Did I ask him to wake me for some appointment that had temporarily slipped my mind? I texted back. No reply. I started to worry. Was he okay? Why wasn’t he answering? Then it dawned on me that he mis-texted.     I can’t really make fun of him (but I will) for mis-texting. I do it a lot. Recently I texted my sister-in-law several dog photos. She wrote back and asked me to stop. Surely she was joking. I texted more dog photos. “You have the wrong number.” She replied. Haha! She’s such a kidder. I texted another dog photo. “I am not Tanya! You have the wrong number. Please stop texting me.” Whoops. If I had been thinking clearly this morning I would’ve texted my husband a picture of me in all my bed headed splendor, flipping him the bird. Such a golden opportunity missed… Have you seen Buzzfeed’s “27 Ways To Response To A Wrong Number Text?” You gotta love people who take the time for antics like[…]

Happy Disability Day?

Today is International Persons with a Disability Day. I’d never actually heard of it until it popped into my Twitter stream. It seems there are “DAYS” of recognition for everything now—like “Wear Brown Shoes Day” (coming up tomorrow in case you’re interested), There’s also: Ninja Day Learn Your Name In Morse Code Day Battery Day (sounds like a great opportunity to relax and recharge) Cat Herder’s Day (otherwise known as parenting small children day) Pigs In A Blanket Day (assuming they mean the food, not “let your Guinea Pig sleep with you”) Talk Liketh Shakespeare Day Hug A Plumber Day (Just don’t get cheeky with their, you know, bum crack) Bird Day—Reminds me, I need to send a pigeon a Happy Bird Day card… And there many other obscure and silly days that completely make my day. In case you think I’m making these up, the entire calendar of DAYS is right here. I don’t know who came up with Disability Day. Is it even real? It certainly is for our family as we “celebrate”and embrace diversity every day. Disability Day, recognized by the United Nations, was established to help break barriers and open doors in hopes of creating[…]
