The Kindness Gene

We were in line at a coffee shop when an older lady ahead of us spilled her change purse. Without hesitation my daughter leaped forward. On her hands and knees she collected the scattered coins and happily handed them over to the appreciative woman.  When it was time for us to order, the cashier leaned in to my daughter and whispered, “Thank you for being so kind.” My daughter shrugged and said, “No problem. I love to help.” And she meant it. She’s the sort of person who would give the shirt off her back. Or the shoes off her feet. The other morning she told me a girl in her class didn’t have gym shoes, so that’s why she was stuffing an extra pair of hers into her backpack.  When we left the restaurant a man waited to hold the door open for us. As we passed through my daughter said, “Awww, thanks!” while she looked up at him, beaming.  As we walked to the car it dawned on her. “Mum, I did something nice for that lady. Then that man did something nice for us. I get it.”  Watching my child articulate such a revelation was pretty moving. In[…]

Avery’s Moment In The Spotlight

Last summer my brother and his family hosted a breast cancer fundraiser in their yard—”FraserFest” was an outdoor concert with bands and food and fun under the stars. But before the stars actually shone, there was rain—crazy heavy rain, strong winds, and even a tornado sighting. To wait out the weather, the adults huddled under the porch while the kids hung out in the basement. When I came downstairs to see what they were doing, I found my daughter encircled by a group of the kindest kids you’ve ever met. Only an hour earlier Avery had been in tears—she couldn’t understand why she couldn’t perform on the stage with the band. “Puh-lease!” she begged. “I want to sing on the stage.” Now, thanks to these big hearted kids, it was her moment and she basked in the glow of the spotlight. Thanks kids. You made this kid’s heart swell. 🙂

Karma Cleanse

I originally called this exercise a #karmacleanse, but then I remembered that purposely using the wrong letters to be cute annoys some people and god knows I wouldn’t want to annoy anyone and have them sarcastically tweet about how “Some people think they’re so clever using two ks.” The level of back stabbing and gossip and PATs (passive aggressive tweets) online is astounding. Whether you choose to participate or feed into it is totally up to you though. If you swim with sharks, you’re bound to get bitten. This is why I prefer adorable dolphins and whales and of course super cute seahorses. I manage the social media end of things for several brands which means I’m kicking around on social media a lot. I am fully immersed in it — the good, the bad, and the downright ugly. The downright ugly seems to have exploded lately. I’m looking at you, trolls.  This ever growing negativity doesn’t just exist online. It’s everywhere—at the grocery store, in the park, in the school parking lot, on television, in the news, in magazines. We can’t seem to get out from under the heavy black cloud of negative ions (science thingy) hanging over our heads. And[…]
