Are some people innately kind? From what I’ve observed, in the special needs community specifically, the answer is yes. We know an abundance of incredibly selfless people who have kindness woven throughout their DNA. When we’re with my daughter’s friends, who have varying disabilities, it’s a safe and comfortable place to be.⁣

There are no monster egos or spiteful jabs. No ‘mean girls’ here—just encouraging smiles and the warmest hugs. They don’t think twice about helping someone or throwing an arm around them if they’re sad. Kindness is always the first choice. It’s an instinct.⁣

Hey look who we ran into at the dentist. I don’t think I’ve posted a pic of my dad on the gram before (the “gram” being slang for Instagram, not for grandma! I will never ever be posting a photo of grandpa on grandma, I can promise you that. 😆)⁣

Anyway, she was already excited to be going to the dentist. Yes, this girl LOVES the dentist. I know. Unusual. But then seeing her grandpa there was the icing on the cake of her perfect day. ⁣

𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫, 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞. Actually, she 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 care. The girl loves a bubble bath, but she’d really rather keep her hair dry if possible. So clipping it up like this makes her happy. ⁣⁣

Speaking of hair washing, on our quest for hygiene independence, this girl has learned to shower (from rinse to towel dry) about 90% on her own. Can I get an amen?! Not that I mind giving her a hand, but it’s nice to be able to stand back (or lie on the bed and scroll through my phone) while she does it on her own. She’s pretty proud of herself let me tell you. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
More happy hygiene and self-care goals for 2020 include: brushing and flossing her teeth (well), shaving her legs (we’re using an electric razor... more to come on that later), mastering the ponytail (she can do it, but it’s loose), and washing her face every night... aka her new “skin care regimen.” ⁣⁣

We all have an area (or... areas!!) of our homes that are less than organized. Mine is my kitchen junk drawer (not to be confused with my “Drunk Drawer” as autocorrect likes to call it). ⁣

I glanced in the backseat and she caught me off guard. I saw a full blown teenage girl, quietly, intently reading to pass the time. READING. This child with developmental delays and intellectual disabilities was reading a chapter book given to her by her best friend for Christmas. She didn’t understand parts of the story, and needed help with some words, but she was determined to read this book by herself. “It’s not a picture book mum. It’s a REAL book.” ⁣

I swear it was just yesterday that we were drawing letter shapes in the sand and clapping out the syllables in simple words. And now, she’s putting it all together. ❤️ ⁣
