Interview Your Child For Posterity

Age 5

“What Are They Thinking?”

I originally interviewed my son three years ago. I asked him the same questions last year and again today. I plan to do it every year or so (with Avery too, once she’s able) for a sweet look back at what my kids were thinking once upon a time…

1. What is something mom always says to you?
2009 – “Be careful!” (So true. I’m obsessive actually. Poor boy’s gonna have issues)
2011- “Stranger Danger!” (Oh dear, clearly I am an over-protective control freak!)
2012 – “This laundry isn’t dirty!” (Why do they put perfectly clean clothes into their laundry hampers? Oh yes, to drive their control freak mother insane.)

2. What makes mom happy?
2009 – When I help my sister. (Aww.)
2011 – When I take care of Avery because if I didn’t, your life would be way harder (I am so lucky to be this boy’s mum.)
2012 – Clean rooms. (True. A messy room does a cranky mother make.)

3. What makes mom sad?
2009 – When babies cry. (Not true. As long as it’s someone else’s…I’m fine.)
2011 – If I get hurt or if I’m not fine. (When YOU’RE not fine, I’M not fine.)
2012 – Me, growing up too fast. (You’re nine. NINE. Slow down will ya?)

4. What does your mom do to make you laugh?
2009 – Nothing. (Wow. Look who has no sense of humour all of a sudden.)
2011 – She tickles me. (Personally, I hate being tickled.).
2012 – Me and also when people fall down. (You are indeed funny. People falling? Even funnier.)

5. What was your mom like as a child?
2009 – I don’t know, I wasn’t even born. (Time to drag out the ancient family videos.).
2011 – Shy and not that great at sports. (True. I was sort of shy. I think that’s why I sucked at team sports. I just wasn’t aggressive enough).
2012 – How am I supposed to know that? (Um, are you not listening when I regale you with captivating tales from my childhood??)
6. How old is your mom?
2009 – 47 (Gee, thanks.)
2011 – 41 (Bingo!)
2012 – 41…no 42, right? (I liked your first answer better.)

7. How tall is your mom?
2009 -14 inches (What, am I a Leprechaun?)
2011 – As tall as my light up in my bunk bed (Note: the light is about 7 feet high. Now I’m a giant.).
2012 – Pretty tall. (I prefer, “Pretty and tall.”)

8. What is her favourite thing to do?
2009 -To be with her family. (Yup. Usually…)
2011 – Being with her family. (Apparently my family has gotten the impression I like them or something?)
2012 – Go on the computer, no, be with the family, but mostly me. (Ooh, nice recovery there.)

9. What does your mom do when you’re not around?
2009 -Work on the computer. (Correct. Facebooking/Tweeting is a lot of work. Pay’s not great though.)
2011 – Feeds the dog, cooks, stays at home and does her blog. (Wow. Rock Star lifestyle all up in here)
2012 – Work. (I really have nothing quippy to say. The kid’s right. Work, or stare at the wall. I alternate.)

10. If your mom becomes famous, what will it be for?
2009 – Zoo keeping. (Um….?)
2011 – Best mother. (Somebody is angling for a BIG birthday present.)
2012 – Longest time on the computer ever. Like, a Guinness Record. (Mmmm, Guinness…)

11. What is your mom really good at?

2009 – Playing. (Yup. I’m a Play-ah).
2011 – Doing stuff with her kids. (I have fooled my children into believing folding laundry, vacuuming and running errands are FUN activities. Suckers).
2012 – Organizing. (Sigh. My label and sick sorting addiction is becoming apparent…)

12. What is your mom not very good at?
2009 – Wii. (Absolutely true. I STINK!)
2011 – Soccer. (Not true! I can bend it like that Beckham guy!)
2012 – Letting me grow up. (Hello. My name is Lisa and I’m am a Bubble Wrap Mom…)

13. What does your mom do for her job?
2009 – She used to be a teacher but now she just teaches us.
2011 – She used to be a teacher, but now she supply teaches and takes care of the house. (Hey look! I’ve expanded my portfolio!)
2012 – Write. (Sometimes.)

14. What is your mom’s favorite food?
2009 – Chips! (Damn. He’s so right. Gotta kick that filthy habit.)
2011 – Avocados! (Mmmm, guacamole…)
2012 – Chips or pickles. (Chips, yes. Pickles? Not so much. Dill pickle chips?? Oh yeah baby. Salt me up!)

15. What makes you proud of your mom?
2009 – Doing the hard work you do. (Can you please explain that to daddy?)
2011 – She really wants to make money for her family so that’s why she goes on the computer. (Hmm. It might be time to come up with a Plan B.)
2012 – I like how she’s protective of Avery and me. (Um. No comment.)

16. If your mom were a cartoon character, who would she be?
2009 – Princess Leia (Technically not a “cartoon” character, but at least he didn’t say Chewbacca)
2011 – Someone in Glee. (I guess my boy isn’t quite sure what constitutes a cartoon.)
2012 – Mrs. Bubble Wrap. (Okay, this is NOT a cartoon character! Cheater.)

17. What do you and your mom do together?
2009 – Make crafts. (Yes, my kid knows his way around glitter and a glue stick).
2011 – Read Harry Potter. (I love this part of our time together. It’s something we both enjoy equally. All kinds of awesome.)
2012 – Talk and have fun. (Yes, we do like to chew the fat my boy and I. And fun? It’s my middle name. Or Lynn.)

18. How are you and your mom the same?
2009 – We both have brown eyes and we both talk a lot. (What? He must have me mistaken with somebody else)
2011 – We both have the same size feet. (I was so sad when I noticed my baby’s feet were now big boy feet.)
2012 – We both like to go for “Walk and Talks” and watch America’s Funniest Home Videos. (Walk and Talks are the best. We walk, he talks. A lot. As for AFHV… people falling down… need I say more?)

19. How are you and your mom different?
2009 – I have golden hair and you have brown hair. (Phew, he didn’t mention my grey patches!)
2011 – Mummy is a woman and I am a boy.
2012 – You are a dog and I am a ram according the Chinese Zodiac chart. (Can you tell we ordered Chinese food last night?)

20. How do you know your mom loves you?
2009 – You don’t like being away from me. (Nothing funny about that. He’s right.)
2011 – She loves me because she always tells me and comes over to me to make sure I’m alright (I DO love you my sweet boy. And as long as you’re alright, I’m alright. xxoo)
2012 – It’s really easy, she says me loves me every day. (True story.)
