What Is “Veganish”?

Please allow me to explain my family’s dietary lifestyle choice, but first just let me make myself a ham and cheese sandwich. Kidding. I haven’t eaten a pig (on purpose) since 1990. I may have scarfed down some bacon in a hungover daze or ingested the occasional undetected bacon bit in a Caesar salad over the years, but for the most part, there is never intentional pork on my fork. I wasn’t really a meat lover growing up, but I tucked in because I needed the meat derived protein. Hello, Canada Food Guide conspiracy. More on that in an upcoming post. My family ate mostly chicken, fish, and the occasional lamb chop—to be clear, I was really only interested in the mint jelly sauce. Steak at our house was rare (as in infrequent, but cooked to a leathery chew-until-next-Tuesday texture). We ate eggs and drank milk, because, ahem…healthy. Little did we know milk, touted for its mega calcium propelled bone building properties, was in fact leaching the calcium from our bones. More on THAT later too. Spoiler alert: Casein is a dietary devil cloaked in a milky white washed dairy deception. In 1990, my first year at university, I wrote[…]

Rabbits, Rabbits, Rabbits

No, I’m not reciting the rhyme that is supposed to ward off campfire smoke. I’m literally saying there are rabbits, rabbits, rabbits EVERYWHERE this summer. Back yard, front yard, side yard, boulevard…there are herds of marauding fuzzy bunnies everywhere. They’ve been grazing on our lawn, which I don’t mind. I’d like it more if they’d focus on eating the weeds. So far they’ve stayed out of my garden, but that’s probably due to the fact that I’m a horrible gardener surrounded by excellent gardeners. These bunnies are well fed. And they’re BIG. And plump. I wonder if any of my neighbours have ever trapped one? Maybe roasted it or put it on a spit? Eww. You’d have to skin it first though, right? How disgusting would that be? Remember that movie “When Rabbit Howls” starring Shelley Long? And why do I even know that? It’s odd I can remember who starred in a 20 year old made for t.v. film, but I can’t remember where I left my car keys (that’s not a metaphor by the way. My keys have been missing for three days). Anyway, if a neighbour had skinned a rabbit I suppose we’d have heard some kind[…]

Yummy Granola

I’ve been wearing Birkenstoks since before they became trendy. I’ve been known to hug the odd tree now and then. And, I LOVE granola. Here’s a tasty and healthy recipe that I make all the time courtesy of my BFF who lives in Vancouver so clearly, she is WAY more “granola” than I am. I buy most of these ingredients in bulk. The Bulk Barn now carries many organic items. Granola Crunch Makes 8 cups. Heat 1/2 cup of honey in a large pot. Once the honey has melted… Add: 1 cup oats 1 cup millet 1 cup sesame seeds 1 cup pumpkin seeds 1 cup sunflower seeds 1 cup sliced almonds 1/2 cup flax seeds (optional) 1 cup shredded unsweetened coconut 1/2 cup raisins or dried cranberries/blueberries 2 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp cinnamon zest of one orange (optional) * I sometimes leave out the almonds and pumpkin seeds to make this granola more toddler friendly aka less “chokey” Mix until all ingredients are coated. At this point you can also add 1/2 cocoa powder for a chocolatey version. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and spread the granola out flat onto two cookie sheets and bake for[…]
