My Love For You Grows and Grows…

Moms who gush about their kids online and in person are annoying. The sun rises and sets on your babies. Your little angels are perfect in every way—sweetness and light personified. We get it. That said…. OHMYGOD I love my children!! They make anything else I’ve done in my life pale in comparison. My stomach actually does little flip flops at the thought of picking them up at the end the day, and my lips are magnetically attracted to the tops of their little heads. I physically can’t stop myself from kissing them sometimes. Obnoxious. Before you tell me to get a life that doesn’t revolve around my children, let me just state that this is nature’s fault, not mine. Mother Nature is no dummy—she knows that in order to preserve the species, mother and child must be connected first physically, and then emotionally. It’s a crazy KRAZY glue kind of bond. So even if your kid is an obnoxious little shit, you have no choice but to fiercely protect them, forever. Ah Mother Nature, you sneaky broad. Unlike a favourite iPhone app or a pet whose novelty eventually wears off, the novelty of your children never fades. Children are[…]

Apparently I’m A Dinosaur…

Call me a wet blanket, but I’m not a fan Hallmark holidays. Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day… I can’t help but think they make those who are missing special people in their lives, feel left out. I don’t make a big deal of these holidays, but when you have children who want to celebrate Mother’s Day by making you feel special, how can you say no? Avery was over-the-moon excited to show me the present she made for me at school. She wasn’t exactly sure what “Mother’s Day” was and she *may* have wished me ‘Happy Birthday’ several times over the weekend. But when she presented me with the candle she made at school she couldn’t have been more proud and I knew this gift came straight from her little heart.  The girl really does light up my life in so many ways… And my son, my sweet creative kid blew me away. Last year for my mom’s birthday, he and I wrote something for her — a mock animal project based on the elusive “Anne” grandma. This Anne-imal project was so much fun to work on together. Clearly he enjoyed it and remembered what to do since he[…]

Mother Your Mother This Mother’s Day

Lucky for me my mother has strong shoulders, because I cry on them often. Learning how to raise a child with special needs has taken a toll on our family. Of course there’s been joy and plenty of laughter and an insane amount of punning (my mom = the Queen of the Punsters), but I’ve also had to lean on her. I’m a mom now, but I still need to be mothered sometimes too.  Yesterday my mum turned 65. Ever young at heart, retiring from her job was not on her radar. “Retirement?” she balked, “That’s for old people.” We never feel our age, no matter how old we are. But then something inevitably happens that makes you face reality head on. Somebody close to you becomes ill, a sister perhaps, and you are reminded of the tenacity of life and you feel the need to spend time with family now because you know, life goes by too quickly. Suddenly retirement doesn’t seem quite so ridiculous. In fact, leaving a career behind in favour of time spent with loved ones becomes the only thing on your radar.  And so in a few months, my mum is going to join my[…]
