“What grade is your daughter in?“ A simple question with a slightly complicated answer. Avery is six and technically in grade one. However, we have been blessed to work with such dedicated educators who have come up with a brilliant scenario. Avery is registered for grade one with a goal for her to complete full-days in the grade one classroom by the end of the school year. For now, there are times throughout the day that even with modifications to the curriculum, Avery is left behind. This is where the creative planning and organization comes in. The team has put together a schedule that allows Avery to spend part of the day with her age appropriate peers, participating in circle time, group work, as well as independent tasks assisted by her amazing E.A.s. Then she is taken to her kindergarten room where she can join in on language and math lessons and more hands-on activities to help further develop her phonics, numeracy and fine motor skills. As a teacher, I know how much effort this detailed schedule took to put together. But the team did it without complaint and with my child’s best interests in mind.[…]

When I write anything; whether it’s an email, a Facebook update, a letter, or a blog post, I try to keep it real. I want the person reading my words to hear my voice. I also want them to trust it. Recently a friend asked me about review blogs. “Are they for real?” she wanted to know. “I mean, people seem to love every single thing they get. How is that even possible?” The answer is…it’s not. When I’m asked to consider a product or service for review I only ever write about the ones I would recommend to a friend. I mean what I say and say what I mean. Fortunately I’ve been able to connect with some quality brands I love like Fisher-Price. Mom Central acts as the “middle man mom” between the brand (Fisher-Price) and the blogger (moi). They connect brands with bloggers who they believe align authentically with a brand’s message and products. Mom Central tries to ensure that toy testers receive Fisher-Price products that suit their age, gender and interests. The weather here in Ontario this summer has been perfect for outdoor fun. And what tops our list of family friendly activities? The drive-in and geocaching! The Drive-In A starlight movie night IS summer. I’ve been going to the drive-in since I was a child and I love taking my kids now that I’m all grown up-ish. Drive-in tips: Arrive early enough to ensure a spot not too close to the screen. This can mean up to two hours before the show (depending on the night and the weather) so come prepared with activities to keep the kids entertained. Many drive-ins have a playground for kids to enjoy while waiting for the sun to set. The drive-in near us happens to have the scariest slide and squeakiest swing set anywhere. Outside food/drinks are not permitted but, if a few bottles of water and some snacks should make it in undetected… so be it. I still head to the snack bar and buy popcorn at some point during the movie anyway. Bring blankets, a sweater, socks (in case it gets cold) and bug spray. Bathrooms get busy in between movies so go just as a movie is ending or after the next[…]

Happy Easter!! A little late, admittedly. But lately blogging about parenting has taken a backseat to you know, parenting. This post is about Easter, but it’s more about imagination; that magical childhood entity that in adulthood often becomes squashed under the heavy burden of daily responsibilities. This Easter our 8 year old questioned the reality of the Easter Bunny. He found a bag of not so carefully hidden chocolates and asked, “Are you the Easter Bunny?” I denied it and hopped away in a panic. He also questioned how a giant rabbit has access to chocolate in the first place and why it’s okay for him to break into people’s houses? Fortunately my boy is still a child at heart and was willing to accept our lame excuses. So for now at least, Mr. E. Bunny lives on. On Easter Eve a certain Super Hero and his sister disappeared to the basement, aka “The Play Pit” for several hours. When asked what they were doing, we were told to wait. “Don’t come down!!!” they shrieked. One dismal day a mysterious box arrived at my door. Behind said door, was a tired mother and a bored five year old, itching for something to do. I suspect Mom Central and Fisher Price may have some kind of “That Mama Needs A Break, ESP.” This was our first official toy delivery during our stint as a Fisher Price Family. The look on my daughter’s face when she saw her new My First Dollhouse…. …was sheer happiness. The look on my face when I read this… ….was all, “Gah! They’re talking about me. To the treadmill!!” *For the record, my husband’s hands are an average size. Santa brought Avery a Fisher Price dollhouse two years ago. But this new abode is a more pimped out version. So now, instead of one lonely home, we have the makings of a neighbourhood. It’s a G-rated version of Knot’s Landing (at least, that’s what is going on in MY head when I’m playing along). Avery has a corner of her room dedicated to her imaginary town. Recently however, I noticed both dollhouses were missing. It seems the kids picked up stakes and moved the town to big brother’s room.
