10 Offline Family Activities To Enjoy This Summer

I have a love/hate relationship with technology. Social media, cell phones, texting — we have instant access to each other 24 hours a day. We tend to log in and tune out. Canadians spend more time online than any other country. This can mean that every member of a family is online on their own device, even in the same room. I just emailed this shocking fact to my husband sitting across from me on the couch. Many parents have expressed concern about technology’s intrusion into their family time. I feel it. Do you? I grew up pre-internet, so I learned how to maintain a conversation and can easily make human contact without being digitally connected. But can I say the same about my children?  Even if we limit our kids’ screen time, their learning and social skills are still impacted by OUR screen time. Have you ever shushed your child so you could finish composing an email? Have you looked away during your child’s soccer game to post an Instagram photo? Have you texted from the dinner table in the middle of your son telling you about his French test? Not proud of it, but I’ve done all of these[…]

Dumb Things Are Funny When You’re Over-Tired

As parents of young children, my husband and I don’t get out much. So when we do go out and stay up past lights out, we pay for it the next day. My parents looked after the kids just last weekend so we could go out and whoop it up. We whooped and were thusly pooped. When my parents dropped the kids home the next day, Adrian and I were two lumps of meat on the couch. Of course, they were all busting with energy. My parents even brought over a new laser machine cat toy thingy for the cat. Kevin wasn’t “feline” it but our daughter was. She kept trying to look into the laser beam. Um…..no. I prefer my children have fully intact retinas. Thanks for the gift, but it had to go back. While we zombies sat on the couch with absolutely zero perceptible movement, minus the occasional eye blink, Avery pulled at my mum to go downstairs to play, while my dad struggled to get the large cat toy back into its tiny box. For some reason our son took this video of the action and you can hear my dad mumbling, “I’ll just uh….” as[…]

The Hills Are Alive, With The Sound of…. What IS That Sound Anyway?

You’ve heard of the Von Trapps — a beloved and marvelously musical Swiss family whose music lives on amongst the hills and beyond. Our family is also musical. That is to say we attempt to make music. It may not be harmonious or even bearable to listen to, but it’s a fun way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon with family. So pull up a chair, insert some earplugs and get ready to witness the most horrendous and off-key music you’ve ever heard. I give you, the Von Crapps! You’re welcome and I’m sorry.

Disney Surprise Scavenger Hunt (video and clues)

We finally did it. We decided. We’re going to Disney World!! We booked it! The most fun was deciding how to spring the news to our kids! Step-by-step Disney for Newbies planning post here. A scavenger hunt with the final clue as the big reveal would be our tactic. Twenty clues hidden around the house with various props and off we went.  The video of how it went is next, but before you watch, let me say… “Wow, that sure didn’t go the way I had imagined.“ Our nine year old was not thrilled about me taping the scavenger hunt. He told me afterwards that he felt self-conscious which is painfully evident when you see his reaction. You’d think we’d told we were going on a trip to the dry cleaners. * yawn *  He said he knew I’d show the video to “the world” {Um kid, I think you’re grossly overestimating your mother’s blog reach} so he didn’t want to over-act and chose to play it cool. Oh dear, it looks like we’ve reached “that stage” where his life is now his and not his mother’s to parade around on the internet. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. Plus, I[…]
