Great Grandparents

One of my grandfathers died when I was little, but I was privileged to have had three grandparents, actively and lovingly participating in my life well into my adulthood. Two of them lived long enough to become great-grandparents.  I lost my last living grandparent earlier this year. He was ninety-seven. But not an old ninety-seven. But rather a witty, knows-your-name-plus-the-names-of-every-one-of-his-childhood-friends, sharp mind, but ailing body, kind of ninety-seven.  This weekend my family spread his ashes, and my grandma’s too (he kept her ashes so they could be together again one day).  My parents were there. And aunts and uncles and cousins too. I regret that I wasn’t able to make the cross-country trip to help honour them.  I am grateful though that I was able to see my grandpa one last time. My daughter and I visited him last spring. It was a special visit. I knew it would be the last.  When I told people my grandpa had died, many were surprised, saying, “Wow. You still have grandparents?” My grandma Fraser died suddenly and unexpectedly in her mid seventies. I don’t think my grandpa ever quite got over the loss. He lived independently for nearly two decades after she had[…]

Easy Snowman Hairstyle

I’m terrible at doing my own hair. I can barely manage a simple ponytail. I’m not much better at styling my daughter’s hair, but she loves sporting fun buns and curious coifs so…. I do my best.  And no word of a lie, if I can do this, you can too! We did this snowman style in under five minutes before school this morning.  The only thing you need to prep ahead of time is the snowman decorations. I’m not especially crafty (as you’ll see) so our snowman looks pretty dishevelled. I’m actually shocked he survived the full school day.  *Note: I didn’t have any ribbon or enough felt to tie a scarf, so I pinned a scarf to Frosty’s neck. Not a great look, but it did in a pinch. If you’re crafty, you can make cute decorations. I’m not only “craft challenged” I’m also pretty lazy, so I deconstructed an ornament from our Christmas tree and bam! Snowman adornments.  Here’s a step-by-step Snowman Hair how-to: ** I am not the creator of this hairstyle. I saw it on Pinterest (isn’t that where we find EVERYTHING good?) and decided to try it. It turned out okay for somebody in a[…]

A Family Hairstory

I am beautiful. At least this is the message I try to model for my daughter. However, when my head is dotted with dry broken hairs, spiking out from my crown, I feel more like a cactus than a beautiful woman. I envy my daughter’s downy mane and I can’t help but stroke it until she tells me to stop hair-assing her. What? You didn’t think this post wouldn’t include a few stray hair puns, did you? Wait! Before you try to escape via some excuse about having to go wash your hair, read on… I have hair tips for you. No really. Perhaps you’ll even call me your hair-o? Okay, okay…I’ll use the puns sp-hairingly.    The other day my son said, “Mum, you have a lot of colours of hair. There’s black hair under your yellow hair and all kinds of white hairs mixed in.”  I am beautiful, I am beautiful, I am beautiful. I must keep repeating this mantra despite my children’s vulgar honesty. I visited the Beauty Supply Outlet last week in search of a cactus-head serum of some kind. My daughter and my mom came along —just us blondes. Well, one natural blonde. Two[…]

Dove Spa – If My Skin Could Talk

You said it Sophia! Beauty is indeed skin deep. However, if your exterior happens to look good too, so be it.   I haven’t been taking the best care of my interior or exterior lately. My recent attempt at a “My Movember Make-Over” was a flop. I’m not making excuses but…*insert a myriad of trumped up excuses here.*   So now it’s “Do-Over December.” I’ve been adhering to a strict-ish 10:30 PM bedtime policy. I’ve also been drinking more water. And egg nog. But mostly, water.      I figure these two endeavors alone must be whipping my insides back into shape, somewhat? But what about my outsides?  My skin is dull and crying out for attention.  I could buff out a rusted Chevy with my elbows and don’t get me started on my feet. I have heels of toast.   Taking care of yourself is neither frivolous nor selfish. We all know a happy mom equals a happy home. If we’re energized, the household buzzes right along with us.    Dove Spa’s philosophy is…   Make women feel more beautiful every day by inspiring them to take great care of themselves.    That’s what I’m talkin’ ’bout.  […]
