As the joke goes, a man walks into a bar. Except in this case it was a boy and the bar was a swimming pool. And instead of walking, he dove. For an entire hour the boy swam and worked on his strokes at swim class.
His mother watched from a bench on the pool deck. She stole occasional glances at her phone, but mostly sat admiring her first born's dolphin-like skill and wondered how frizzy her hair would actually be at the end of the humid hour (very frizzy, think Bozo the Clown, in case you were wondering).
So what's the punchline — other than the mother's fuzzy lid?
The boy gets of out the pool, towels off, dresses and heads home. In the car he complains of feeling light headed and tired and begins to feel faint.
I never said the punchline was funny.
His blood sugar had dropped. From that day forward the mother made sure her son had oatmeal or cereal for breakfast before class and she stocked the swim bag with protein bars to eat afterwards — for her son — the mother never snuck into the bag and ate a bar during the class. Never. Except twice.
I've made my own granola/nut bars. They're pretty good, in a crumbly kind of way. Perhaps I'll post the recipe at some point. But lately, I've bought cereal and protein bars to have on hand and to keep in the swim bag.
We haven't tried them yet, but there are six new cereal bars on the market including:
Nature Valley Protein: Peanut Almond & Dark Chocolate, Nature Valley Protein Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate, Fibre 1 Peanut Butter and Fibre 1 Caramel Nut.
As of June 3rd (until June 25th) grab a coupon for a FREE BOX of cereal bars, available to anyone who visits this ~> Facebook page (click the "Two Free Coupons" link at the top of the page).
The coupons will be redeemable on July 23rd only. It's a 1-day redemption period, so if you're forgetful like me, you’ll need to set a reminder on your phone.
If you have a chance to try them, let me know what you think!
